Welcome to the St Helens Croquet Club

A Friendly Club on the East Coast

St Helens Sports Ground

History of Club

St Helens has nearly 100 years involvement with Croquet. The original club, located near the present day tennis club, was active as far back as the 1930’s.

The present day club, located at the St Helens Sports Grounds, commenced in 2002 with a single lawn carved out of rough ground. A second lawn was added in 2009, with a third in 2021 made possible by hard work from our greenkeeper and generous donations from members.

Croquet Activities

Golf Croquet and Aussie Croquet (similar to Ricochet) are played at St Helens. Association Croquet (AC) is not currently played.

The lawns allow play on three full size courts, each of which can be split into two half size courts to cater for large numbers, or to allow players with less mobility to also participate.

At St Helens the emphasis is on social play however we do have a Golf Croquet club championship competition for ladies and men’s Singles, and mixed Doubles.

Events

Our annual Croquet Fun Weekend has become very well known, and invitations are extended to all clubs and players. This is a weekend of croquet fun with socialising over a BBQ lunch, and a Saturday evening function.

Membership

Our annual membership fee is very competitive. Green fees are also payable but have a weekly cap for multiple sessions. Contact us for details of current fees.

New players

We pride ourselves in being a friendly club with enjoyment of playing the game a priority. We offer free “come and try” sessions to give prospective new members a taste of croquet. Experienced members are happy to guide new players on how to play the game, and give tips on how to develop skills and strategy to improve their play.

Club logo and uniform

Our logo is a map of Tasmania with crossed mallets and a set of primary colour balls, with the red ball marking the location of St Helens. This was chosen from member’s designs.

Our club uniform consists of a turquoise and white polo shirt and a black jacket with a turquoise lining.

Playing Times

Golf Croquet is played on Monday afternoons, and Tuesday and Saturday mornings. Aussie Croquet is played on Thursday mornings.

All morning sessions start at 10:00 am during the winter months of June, July and August, and 9:00 am for all other months of the year. Start times are 1:30 pm on Monday afternoons all year round.

Visitors are welcome at any of these sessions. Please contact us in advance to confirm, and arrive 15 minutes prior to start time for registration and payment of green fees.

Association Croquet (AC) is not played at St Helens but visitors wanting to play this game are welcome to come and show us how.
